We noticed something. Then we built a thing.
Every weekday morning, nine images. One of them is always you. That's Daily Mood Boards. This is how we got here.
How It Started
Someone posted a mood scale on social media: a grid of nine images where you pick the one that matches how you're feeling that day. Actors, mostly. Some animals. It was oddly accurate and people loved it.
The problem was most of them were low-quality screenshots that had circulated for years without anyone making them consistently, or well. We thought we could do better. We were right, although that took longer than expected.
How We Choose the Boards
Every board is hand-curated. No algorithm, no automation. We search, we sift, we argue about which nine images best represent the full range of human feeling on a given theme. Then we do it again the next day. It takes longer than you'd think.
Themes come from pop culture, from the natural world, from our own very strong opinions, and increasingly from the request inbox, which, it turns out, contains some very good ideas.
Why Pointing at a Picture Works
Saying "I feel like image four on the Meryl Streep board" is a safer, more playful way to communicate than "I'm struggling today." It works because it's indirect. And because it's funny. And because sometimes you genuinely cannot find the words but you can absolutely find the image.
Teams use it in standups. Teachers use it as a morning check-in. Some people use it entirely alone, just to figure out what kind of day they're having before it gets away from them. All of the above seems reasonable to us.
You Can Request a Board
A significant number of boards come directly from requests. If you want to see a theme that doesn't exist yet (a specific show, a specific animal, a specific vibe) ask. We might already have it scheduled. If we don't, we probably will.
It's Free. Here's Why.
Daily Mood Boards is independent. We keep it free through a modest amount of advertising and the occasional coffee donation. If you find yourself here every morning, a coffee goes a long way.
That's more or less it. See you tomorrow. ✦
